MOUNTAINS KARIONG CRICKET CLUB HISTORY
Mountains District Cricket Club was formed in 1930, entering it's first
competitive side in the Gosford District competition in the 1930/31 season.
By the 1950's Kulnura & Peats Ridge had formed their own teams. Peats
Ridge also competing in the district 1st grade competition.
These three clubs combined forces during the 1959/60 season to form the
club to be known as Mountains.
In 1969, & with only 14 registered players, Mountains applied to Gosford
District Association to merge with the Matcham Cricket Club to form Matcham
Mountains. This move crossed the Gosford Club's boundaries, but was a
means for both fledgling Clubs to survive & nurture the growth of cricket on
the Central Coast.
Both Clubs played under this structure between 1969 – 1981 enjoying early
success with a 1st Grade Premiership in the 1970/71 season. Amongst this
combined premiership winning team were 5 Mountains players:
- Dick Baxter
- Brian Draper
- Peter Fremantle
- Doug Hart &
- a young man by the name of George Lammi
A copy of the newspaper reports on the match & team photo are held in our
Libary Page.
That season Ted Davis and Tony Stone both scored over 300 runs, with
George Lammi and Col Easey capturing 121 wickets between them at an
average of 7.4.
In the mid to late 70's the combined Club enjoyed a purple patch in 2nd
Grade. Premierships were won in 1975/76, 1977/78 (when two
Matcham/Mountains teams fought out the Final), and 1978/79.
Players who had notable performances during this period were George
Lammi, Phil Dales, Dennis Allen, Jeff Allen, Gordon Reardon and Peter Watson.
Also in 1978/79 the Club entered two teams in 1st Grade to eliminate a bye.
The Club's Under 16's won their first Premiership in the middle of these
successes in 1976/77.
In 1980/81 the Mountains Club again stood alone when the Mountains
Kariong Club was reformed to represent the Mountains District.
